It is only the second annual celebration, following its launch last year by Nazma Khan, a young New Yorker.
She came up with he idea as a means for foster religious tolerance and understanding by inviting women, both muslim, and non- muslim, to experience the hijab for one day.
Nazma's other objective was to allay some of the myths and controversies surrounding why Muslim women choose to wear the hijab.
She especially felt the call to bring message having experinced "being the odd one out" since her school days after her family moved from Bangladesh to the United States, when she was 11 years old.
Thanks to social media, the message has spread for the wide, and has attracted the interest of women, both muslim and non muslim, in more than 100 countries. There are also more than 50 appointed World Hijab Day ambassadors in over 20 countries.
According to the official website, Malaysia has a total of seven ambassadors.
One of them, Murshidah Said (pic left) of Selangor, shared the spotlight with the founder Nazma, in a live video interview on Huffington Post today.
Two non-muslim Malaysian are mentioned in the website, namely Mrs Universe 2013, Carol Lee, who said to have endorsed the movement and Felixia Yeap, the ex-Playboy bunny and model, who shares her story on wearing the hijab. Yeap was also featured on The Malaysia Insider two months ago.
In Malaysia, the World Hijab Day celebration today saw participants gathering near the Sunway Pyramid in Selangor.
